The Chair of Applied Statistics and Econometrics is pleased to announce the following workshop:

1st SOEPcampus @ Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz:

Introduction to the German Socio-economic Panel Study

which will take place on May 3–4, 2018 (Rewi I Room: PC-Pool 00-275). The workshop is kindly supported by funding of the research unit “Interdisciplinary Public Policy – IPP”.

The German Socio-economic Panel Study (SOEP) is a representative panel study for the German population, collecting data from selected German households on a broad variety of topics of everyday life including general wellbeing, household composition, educational aspirations and educational status, income and occupational biographies, leisure time activities, housing, health, and political orientation. With its long running panel structure, the breadth of information and the representative nature of the data, the SOEP has become one of the most important resources in the social sciences for quantitative research in relation to Germany.

The one-and-a-half day workshop offers a well-grounded and practically oriented introduction into this sophisticated data source. Participants will be introduced to the content of the study, its data-structure, sample selection, and weighting strategy. An overview of the study documentation will also be provided. In a variety of “Hands-on Sessions” participants will learn to work with the SOEP data with the help of the data-management tool Paneldata.org and the documentation material. The Hands-On Sessions mimic the entire process from identifying and finding variables containing specific information in the dataset to the creation of the final dataset for the analysis as well as first empirical investigations.

The workshop will be held by two SOEP staff members who will be happy to discuss any questions regarding the dataset and the documentation material.
